Andreas Plückthun is director at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Zurich. He studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and received his graduate education in San Diego at the University of California.

After winning several prestigious awards, he became an elected member of the German National Academy of Science in 2003. He co-founded the Munich Biotech Company Morphosys and the Zurich Biotech Company Molecular Partners AG, where he serves on the Supervisory board.

His current research is centered on protein engineering, combining protein design, directed evolution and applications. While protein engineering is always in the center, his research is very interdisciplinary.

Examples of his research are the creation of newly engineered binding proteins to inhibit other proteins or to kill tumor cells, or the stabilization of proteins so that they can be studied structurally and biophysically. Prof. Plückthun will talk about "Influencing cells with man-made proteins" on 28 October 2015 at 6 pm to the interested public at Ackermannshof in Basel.
