What is systematics?

Systematics is the science of recording and ordering the diversity of living organisms. This field of biology includes the scientific designation of species and higher taxonomic units (eg genus, family, etc.) and their classification in a hierarchical system. Systematics is of central importance for all biodiversity researches because a good taxonomic knowledge of organisms is a basic requirement for the study and protection of habitats. An important part of systematics includes the study of the relationships between species and the reconstruction of their phylogeny.
